A quick and easy sticky sesame chicken recipe ready in 30 minutes, featuring a sweet-savory honey-sesame sauce coating crispy chicken pieces served over rice, garnished with sesame seeds and green onions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts (or thighs)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (can substitute gluten-free flour blend or rice flour)
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch (for dredging)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • White rice, cooked (for serving)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds (toasted, for garnish)
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Sauce ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (use gluten-free tamari if desired)
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Slurry:
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • Approximately 1 tablespoon cold water

Instructions

  1. Whisk together all the sauce ingredients (honey, ketchup, brown sugar, white vinegar, soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, salt) in a bowl and set aside.
  2. Prepare three shallow bowls: one with beaten eggs, one with all-purpose flour, and one with 3 tablespoons cornstarch for dredging.
  3. Dip each chicken piece first into the beaten egg, then coat evenly with flour, and then dredge in cornstarch, ensuring full coverage.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the coated chicken pieces and cook evenly on all sides until golden brown and crispy, about 5 to 10 minutes depending on size.
  5. Use a slotted spoon to transfer cooked chicken to paper towels to drain excess oil.
  6. Pour prepared sticky sauce into the skillet and bring to a gentle boil.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk cold water and 2 tablespoons cornstarch to make a slurry, then stir it into the hot sauce. Cook until sauce thickens.
  8. Return the chicken to the pan coating with the thickened sauce.
  9. Serve the sticky sesame chicken over cooked white rice, and garnish with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions.

Notes

For extra saucy chicken, double the sauce ingredients., Swap green onions with cilantro or parsley for different garnishes., Toasted chopped cashews or peanuts can be used instead of sesame seeds for crunch., Lighter cooking alternatives: bake coated chicken at 425°F (220°C) for 15–20 minutes flipping once, or air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 10–12 minutes., Leftovers keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days and freeze up to 5 months., To reheat, warm gently and add more sauce or a splash of water to restore stickiness.
