A comforting casserole with layered seasoned ground beef, thinly sliced potatoes, and melted cheese, baked until bubbly and golden.

  • 1 lb ground beef (85/15 lean)
  • 4 medium potatoes (russet or Yukon Gold), peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella), freshly shredded recommended
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Brown ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, breaking up and cooking for 7 to 10 minutes until no longer pink.
  3. Drain excess grease from beef.
  4. Add chopped onion to skillet and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes until soft and fragrant.
  5. Season beef and onions with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder; stir for about 1 minute to blend flavors.
  6. Peel and thinly slice potatoes.
  7. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  8. Arrange half the potato slices evenly in the dish; lightly sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  9. Spread the seasoned beef and onion mixture evenly over the potatoes.
  10. Layer the remaining potato slices over the beef.
  11. Whisk milk and melted butter together; pour evenly over the potato layers to seep between them.
  12. Sprinkle 1 to 2 cups shredded cheese evenly over the top.
  13. Cover dish tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  14. Remove foil and bake uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes until cheese is bubbly and lightly golden and potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  15. Let casserole rest about 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
